What Would a “Normal” Year Be?: 1927

E. E. Kaufman, federal-state crop statistician at Sacramento, announces in his latest crop report that the condition of pastures in California is “99 percent normal.” If this year’s pasture is less than normal, we would like very much to know just how the honorable statistician figures a normal year.

Veteran cowmen say that the pastures this year are the best in 18 years and we had all been kidding ourselves into thinking that we had splendid pasture. But good things cannot endure forever for now we know that pasture is only “99 percent normal.”

The same report says that cattle are “93 percent of normal” and that sheep are “94 percent normal.” And we, in our blessed ignorance, have been thinking that cattle and sheep were the best in years. We sure would like to see some cattle in 100 percent “normal” condition.
