NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center forecasts a 71% chance that La Niña could form between September and November, lasting through the winter months.
Although a La Niña watch remains in effect, forecasters describe this upcoming La Niña as “weak and short.” This suggests a lower likelihood of typical winter impacts, though some signals may still influence the forecast.
La Niña often brings a warmer, drier winter to the South, colder conditions to the northern Plains and a wetter winter in the Pacific Northwest.
