A U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) panel ruled in favor of the U.S. challenging certain Mexico biotechnology measures on genetically engineered corn.
The panel agreed with the U.S. on all seven of its legal claims, finding that Mexico’s measures are not based on science and undermine market access that Mexico agreed to provide. In February 2023, Mexico announced plans to immediately ban the use of genetically engineered corn in dough and tortillas, and to gradually eliminate the use of genetically engineered corn for other food uses and animal feed.
“This ruling is a critical step in ensuring that U.S. farmers can continue to compete fairly in the global marketplace,” said Ambassador Doug McKalip.
Mexico has 45 days from Dec. 20 to comply with the panel’s findings.
