Trump rolls back fish protection memo

On June 12, President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum rolling back the Biden administration’s “Restoring Healthy and Abundant Salmon, Steelhead, and Other Native Fish Populations in the Columbia River Basin” memo.

The White House said the memo placed concerns about climate change above the country’s interests in reliable energy sources.

The National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) applauded the measure, saying the memo had included recommendations to breach one or more of the Lower Snake River dams.

“We have long stood against dam breaching because of the devastating economic consequences it would impose on communities throughout the Pacific Northwest,” said NAWG President Pat Clements.

    I read the National Association of Wheat Growers' comments on the rollback. I thought it was based on water rights, but I was wrong. The Columbia River serves as a significant water transportation for moving harvested wheat from the 20 states to the Pacific rim countries. If trucked, that amount would require 538 semi-trucks, or 144 railroad cars, on the river, just four barges
