Trich identified in WY county

The Wyoming Livestock Board announced a recent case of trichomoniasis, a venereal disease affecting cattle, was detected in a herd in Fremont County, WY.

Commonly referred to as “trich,” this disease is caused by the protozoa Tritrichomonas foetus. Trichomoniasis can be transmitted from infected bulls to cows, leading to decreased fertility and induced abortions, thereby reducing calf production.

While bovine trichomoniasis has been present in western U.S. states, including Wyoming, for decades, testing remains the sole means of confirming its presence. The identified case marks the first positive instance of trichomoniasis in Wyoming since the fall of 2016.

For further information regarding trichomoniasis, please contact the Wyoming Livestock Board animal health staff at 307-777-7515 or email lsbforms-applications@wyo.gov.
