Texas Tech University’s School of Veterinary Medicine is addressing the nationwide shortage of food animal veterinarians by launching its first food animal residency program, aimed at strengthening veterinary services in rural and agricultural communities.
Led by Jennifer Koziol, associate professor of food animal medicine and surgery, the initiative is supported by a $250,000 USDA Veterinary Service Grant. Planned to begin in 2026, the residency will train early-career veterinarians through advanced clinical and research experience, preparing them for teaching roles in food animal medicine.
“This residency program is transformative for our school and the cattle industry,” said Guy Loneragan, dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, noting graduates will pursue diplomate status through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, advancing livestock health and U.S. food security.
