Strong demand from the U.S. has led to increased lamb and beef exports from Australia, according to Meat and Livestock Australia.
In May, Australian lamb exports reached a record high of 36,703 tons for a single month. The U.S. remains the largest market for Australian lamb, followed by China and the Middle East and North Africa region. Meat and Livestock Australia said robust exports present opportunities for expanding its market share in traditional and emerging markets.
Beef exports also saw significant growth, rising 9% from April and 25% compared to May 2023, totaling 113,923 tons. This marks the largest monthly beef export since December 2019, driven by a 74% year-on-year increase in exports to the U.S., which accounted for 27% of total exports.
U.S. production decline has boosted demand for Australian beef in Japan and Korea.
