The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) announced the removal of three more wolves from the Lookout Mountain Pack after the department determined the pack was involved in 12 depredations since July.
ODFW staff have removed eight wolves from the pack since lethal control was first authorized in late July. According to ODFW, three wolves—a collared female and up to two juvenile wolves—remain in the pack.
The Center for Biological Diversity was “saddened and angered” by the announcement. “Oregon is home to only 173 confirmed wolves, yet the lethal measures the (ODFW) chose as its response to conflicts with livestock have destroyed nearly 5 percent of the state’s wolf population,” said Amaroq Weiss, senior wolf advocate with the Center for Biological Diversity. “These rare conflicts should be addressed through better livestock husbandry practices, not killing wolves.”
