A liquid nitrogen leak killed six employees at the Foundation Food Group poultry processing plant in Gainesville, GA, in late January. The source of the leak has been determined to be from a conveyor belt issue.
The plant uses nitrogen to flash-freeze chicken and an “inadvertent release” happened on one of the production lines. A dozen people were injured and 130 people were evacuated, while six people died as a result of their injuries. The line where the leak happened was out of service due to a belt issue.
