Royal Ranch in Royal City, WA, is working toward a carbon-neutral approach on their 5,000-acre crop, dairy and beef cattle operation in central Washington.
According to owner Austin Allred, it started with the farm’s 8-acre biofilter, a “worm bed” that acts as a water filtration system and helps to recycle gray water for reuse. The operation also uses manure from the cows and worms for regenerative agriculture practices with crop rotation to achieve its carbon-neutral goal.
Allred also noted the key to carbon-neutral cattle is in the soil and in keeping their beef raised from birth to harvest on the ranch. Allred estimates he is sequestering and receiving credits of 42,000 tons of carbon annually through their practices.
