After the livestock complex at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds caught fire on Oct. 31, Gov. Kristi Noem (R) proposed allocating $12 million in funding for a new livestock building.
The complex would cost around $19 million total, and could bring regional and national events to Huron. “We’re going to use this as an opportunity to rebuild for the future,” Noem said at a press conference in Huron. “It’s time to imagine the opportunities that we can have, and all the new memories that can be made in this spot.”
The new complex will be 200,000 square feet, double the square footage of the previous building. Two rodeo areas and space for 2,000 beef cattle are to be included in the complex. South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture Hunter Roberts said the project will likely be ready by the State Fair in 2022.
