Story Short: Lab-grown chicken given initial OK

UPSIDE Foods, a cultivated meat, poultry and seafood company, has been given the OK by USDA to proceed with the production and sale of cultivated chicken.

The company completed the pre-market regulatory review process for its lab-grown chicken after receiving a grant of inspection from USDA.

“With this approval, UPSIDE Foods can now start commercial production and sales of its cultivated chicken, taking a historic step towards building a more humane, sustainable, and resilient food system,” the company said in a news release.

UPSIDE Foods was the first company to receive USDA’s green light for cultivated meat last fall. The company plans to market a “whole-textured chicken product that is over 99% cultivated chicken sales” for its first product, which will be launched in limited quantities through restaurant partners.

“This approval will fundamentally change how meat makes it to our table,” aid Dr. Uma Valeti, CEO and Founder of UPSIDE Foods. “It’s a giant step forward towards a more sustainable future—one that preserves choice and life.”
