The Idaho wolf population in 2022 declined by 13% from 2021 based on camera surveys taken during the peak summer months.
According to an Idaho Fish and Game News release, the state had an estimated 1,337 gray wolves in 2022, 206 fewer than the 2021 estimate of 1,543. The population had been stable for three years, averaging 1,548 from 2019-21.
Idaho Fish and Game Director Ed Schriever said reducing the wolf population has been a priority, and they would like to see the population around 500 wolves.
“We are encouraged by efforts that have resulted in a drop in wolf numbers, and this aligns with our long-term goal to reduce Idaho’s wolf population,” Schriever said.
