The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has again extended the hours of service exemption through Dec. 31, 2020.
The waiver applies to truckers who are hauling goods in “direct assistance in support of emergency relief efforts related to COVID-19” and include livestock and livestock feed haulers, medical supplies, food, paper products, and other groceries for emergency restocking of distribution centers or stores.
The previous extension was set to expire on Sept. 14. The FMCSA also reiterated that the waiver does not give motor carriers the right to compel fatigued drivers to operate.
Earlier this year, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association applauded the extension but stated more needs to be done, such as permanently fixing hours-of-service regulations.
