A coalition of environmental organizations filed suit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) for failing to adopt management rules to promote crucial genetic diversity for the Mexican gray wolf.
The suit challenges rule 10(j) of the Endangered Species Act (ESA), stating USFWS has determined the wolf population as “not essential” by capping the population and including restrictions on the ability of the wolves to disperse to suitable habitats.
The coalition said the management rules conflict “with the best available science on the long term recovery needs of endangered subspecies and fail to ensure the conservation of Mexican wolves in the wild in the United States as required by the ESA.”
