In a Facebook post, Sheriff Ray Sappington said the 10-year-old, unvaccinated cow became ill and was experiencing breathing issues. The cow succumbed to rabies and was sent to the state for testing.
According to the release, the owners, two additional assistants and a veterinarian were exposed to the animal’s saliva while trying to save the cow. The remaining herd of 39 cows is quarantined and vaccinated.
The cattle owner, veterinarian, state authorities and the Cooke County Sheriff’s Office are all working together to ensure this incident remains contained, the post said.
