Ottawa County, KS, commissioners approved a proposed meat processing plant by Lava Angus Processing.
The plan would convert a former racetrack on Highway 81 in Ottawa County near Minneapolis, in the north-central part of the state. The proposed plant has met opposition from community members after Lava Angus Processing stated it would initially process 50 head per day in the first year with the goal of processing up to 500 head per day over the next five years.
“No one had a problem with the 50 head. It’s when it got to the 100s and the 250s up to 500, which now they’re saying is going to happen. But the zoning law passed, and there (are) no restrictions,” community member Alice Gruber told the commissioners.
The plant is expected to create 50 jobs in the first year, with the expectation of up to 130 jobs at full capacity.
