As Colorado seeks to introduce wolves into the state by the end of the year, one lingering question has remained: Where are the wolves coming from?
For the director of Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), western states just may be the answer to that question. In mid-May, Jeff Davis, CPW director, penned letters to the Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon departments of fish and wildlife, requesting wolves from their state.
“I recognize that there may be a formal process to request wolves from your respective state,” he wrote. “If you are open to it, I would like to begin the discussion to determine if your state would be a willing donor, and if so, embark on the necessary process to secure the arrangement.”
He noted the state is working to finalize a 10 (j) rule to establish an experimental population, as “we need maximum flexibility for management of currently federally endangered wolves in Colorado.”
