The cause for the fire at a JBS plant in Grand Island, NE, on Sept. 12 has been attributed to overheated machinery.
Grand Island Fire Prevention Division Chief Fred Hotz told local news outlet Nebraska TV that a heater in the rendering area of the plant near the roof of the building caught fire. The heater is used to dry out animal materials, such as bones and marrow. Hotz said the heater overheated, and since it vents to the roof, the flames were able to spread to the roof.
The investigation is now concluded, although damage costs have not yet been determined.
