The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has confirmed two of the state’s wolf packs have produced pups this year.
In its quarterly wolf report, CDFW confirmed the Lassen Pack had five pups, while the Whaleback Pack produced six pups.
The Lassen Pack now numbers 12, with only the breeding female fitted with a functioning GPS collar. According to CDFW, the pack is now utilizing a different summer range, perhaps due to local deer distribution changes from the Dixie Fire.
The Whaleback Pack likewise has only one functioning GPS collar attached to the breeding male and now numbers 13. The quarterly report also stated that four confirmed depredations of calves occurred from the two packs.
