California-based Belcampo Meat Co. abruptly shut down its e-commerce, retail and restaurant operations after a controversy over its meat sourcing.
In May, a former butcher posted a video on social media that some of the meats at the Santa Monica, CA, location came from Australian and Tasmanian meat companies and not from Belcampo’s farm.
After the release of the videos, Belcampo conducted its own investigation and reported: “Overall, externally sourced meats which did not meet Belcampo quality standards represented 6 percent of the total value of all meats procured from the beginning of 2020 to the end of May 2021.”
According to a statement from CEO Garry Embleton, the farm and processing facility in Shasta County, CA, are still operational, and it will investigate “a range of options,” including sales of products without the name “Belcampo” attached.
