Tracy Stone-Manning, the current director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), will assume the presidency of The Wilderness Society next February, the organization announced.
Previously a senior aide to Montana Democrats Sen. Jon Tester and Gov. Steve Bullock, her 2021 nomination by President Joe Biden faced Republican scrutiny due to her involvement in a 1989 tree-spiking case as a graduate student. As director of BLM, Stone-Manning moved forward with the Public Lands Rule, placing conservation on par with grazing and energy development. The Wilderness Society said Stone-Manning aims to champion public land protections and community-driven conservation.
