New legislation was introduced last week in the U.S. Senate by Sens. John Hoeven (R-ND) and Michael Bennet (D-CO) to reform rules regarding electronic logging devices and hours of service for commercial truck drivers hauling livestock. Pictured is one of Mark Yazel’s cattle trucks. Yazel

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in late July withdrew the “speed limiter rule.”

The withdrawal removes the 2016 requirement that heavy vehicles weighing more than 26,000 pounds be equipped with a speed-limiting device maintained at a set speed. The agencies said the rule was withdrawn due to “significant policy and safety concerns and continued data gaps.” The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) applauded the move.

“America’s livestock haulers know how to safely navigate our nation’s roads and putting an artificial speed device in the truck with them was only going to create safety hazards, increase risk to drivers and travelers, and push livestock haulers out of their jobs,” said NCBA Policy Division Chair Skye Krebs.
