Two opposing efforts to end the government shutdown failed on Thursday, Jan. 24. on mostly partisan lines.
The first vote, on an effort backed by President Donald Trump that included his demanded $5.7 billion for the southern border wall, failed with a 50-47 vote, short of the necessary 60. Yes votes came overwhelmingly from Republicans and no votes came from Democrats and Independents. Three senators, one Democrat and two Republicans, opposed their parties.
Similarly, Senate Amendment 6 to H.R. 268, which would have funded the government for the next few weeks but lacked the $5.7 billion border wall money, failed in a 52-44 vote. This was slightly more bipartisan, with six Republicans joining Democrats and Independents with yes votes. — WLJ
