The CDC is working to identify the source of ground beef that led to an outbreak of salmonella across four states.

As of July 25, CDC officials reported at least 16 people became sick from eating ground beef, with 6 people hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Affected individuals believe the source came from 80% lean ground beef purchased from ShopRite locations in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.

Those affected include nine New Jersey residents, five New York residents, one Connecticut resident and one Massachusetts resident. Most people infected with Salmonella experience diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps.

CDC recommends cooking ground beef to an internal temperature of 160 F to kill salmonella bacteria.
