Rep. Mike Flood (R-NE-01) has introduced a resolution pushing back against the United Nations’ (UN) newest food strategy that recommends reducing the amount of meat in diets.
In a memo at last month’s COP28, the UN’s Food & Agriculture Organization recommended beef be reduced in diets, provided non-meat alternatives and suggested that meat production be “rebalanced,” according to Flood’s news release.
“The resolution I’m introducing today makes it clear that the United States opposes any attempt to reduce or eliminate meat production,” Flood said. “Doing so would shatter the world’s food security and end an age-old way of life for millions of farm and ranch families across the globe.”
The resolution proclaims the importance of meat and livestock production to the U.S. economy and the importance of animal-based protein in general. The resolution disapproves of the UN recommendation and opposes the use of federal resources to support attempts to reduce meat consumption.
