The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is delaying its publication of the final revised red wolf recovery plan.
The agency said doing so will ensure it has adequate time to use the results of a forthcoming population viability analysis for informing the final revised recovery plan.
The publication date will be moved back to Sept. 29 from Feb. 28. The agency plans to receive the population viability analysis in June and will analyze the results before including additional information into the recovery plan.
“The plan will prioritize collaborative conservation by engaging stakeholders in management to mitigate threats to the species on the basis of shared understanding and expectations for the species’ recovery,” the agency said in a press release.
As of February 2023, there were an estimated 19 head of wild red wolves in the range of eastern North Carolina.
