The House Committee on Natural Resources is investigating the settlements between ranchers in California’s Point Reyes National Seashore, the National Park Service (NPS) and The Nature Conservancy.
Earlier this year, a dozen livestock producers agreed to end beef and dairy cattle operations at the seashore, reaching settlements with environmental groups. In March, Niman Ranch founder William Niman and his wife, Nicolette Hahn Niman, sued NPS for its settlement.
In a letter penned to The Nature Conservancy, lawmakers on the House committee wrote, “The committee is concerned not only with the lack of transparency surrounding the settlement but also with the environmental and legal consequences the settlement may impose.” The committee asked for more information to be provided by April 24.
