The Center for Biological Diversity filed a legal petition with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the Oasis Valley speckled dace fish found in Nevada under the Endangered Species Act.

The group said the species is threatened by proposed gold mines near the Amargosa River, where fish is found in its springs. The Oasis Valley speckled dace is one of the populations of the Amargosa speckled dace.

“If we don’t take immediate action, we could lose this biologically important little fish and the precious, rare desert springs it needs for survival,” said Patrick Donnelly, Great Basin director at the Center.
