Fires continue to rage across the West, with the Northwest in particular seeing a large amount of wildfire activity.

As of July 24, 98 large active wildfires were being managed and had burned more than 1,611,000 acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

Oregon had 34 active fires, California 15 fires, Arizona 11 fires and Washington 9 fires (numbers do not include individual fires within complexes).

The Durkee Fire burning near the Oregon-Idaho border and the Cow Valley Fire, just south of the Durkee Fire, merged on the afternoon of July 24.

“The wildfires in Eastern Oregon have scaled up quickly,” Gov. Tina Kotek said in a news release Wednesday. “We are facing strong erratic winds over the region that could impact all fires. Rain is not getting through. Some communities do not have power.”

As of July 25, the Durkee Fire grew to nearly 270,000 acres and was 0% contained. The Cow Valley Fire was at 134,000 acres and was 91% contained.
