The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine recently released “Redesigning the Process for Establishing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.” The book examines the current scientific evidence regarding what foods Americans should eat to promote their health. It additionally serves as a discussion on the process by which the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) should be compiled. The DGA is the primary federal source for “consistent, evidence-based information on dietary practices for optimal nutrition,” according to the National Academies Press, which produced the book. The book is a “short report” meant to inform the upcoming 2020 review cycle for reassessing the next edition of the DGA. The 260-page book can be purchased or downloaded for free as a PDF at www.nap.edu; search for “24883.”
