MT proposes wolf kill quota increase

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) is proposing to increase the wolf kill quota for the 2025-2026 wolf season from 300 wolves to 500 wolves.

If the quota was met, the state’s wolf population would roughly halve to about 550 wolves. FWP is also proposing to allow infrared scopes and thermal imagery scopes for hunting outside of daylight hours. Hunters or trappers may take up to 15 wolves per season per hunting or trapping license, if at least five wolves are taken from Region 1 or Region 2. A person can fill both their wolf hunting bag limit and wolf trapping bag limit in one season (taking up to 30 wolves) as long as 10 wolves are taken from Region 1 or Region 2. The FWP Commission will meet to discuss the proposed increase at its next meeting on Aug 21.
