Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins met with Mexico Agriculture Minister Julio Berdegué through a video call in late October to discuss an agreement to open the U.S. back up to Mexican cattle, Berdegué said during Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s daily press conference on Oct. 28.
However, no date was set to resume imports into the U.S. Berdegué said the secretaries are only having conversations, so no specific details or dates have been arranged. He also noted that Mexico will plan to test modular plants for the first time, which are expected to produce 20 million sterile flies each week if successful. In related news, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has called on the U.S. to allow “targeted imports” of Mexican cattle to stabilize cattle supplies.
“The quickest way to reduce beef prices and do it within 24 hours is to import feeder cattle instead of boxed beef,” Miller said. “As we enter the Mexican feeder cattle season (November to February), we can safely reopen ports of entry in a controlled, incremental way without risking the spread of pests like the screwworm fly.”
