Male Mexican wolf 3065 was captured Nov. 7 north of Interstate 40 near Gallina, NM, and returned to the Mexican Wolf Experimental Population Area in the Gila National Forest.
The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish conducted the capture by helicopter under a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recovery permit. The wolf had dispersed north of the recovery area in July and showed no sign of returning. Officials said such movements are common when wolves search for mates, but isolation and potential encounters with domestic dogs posed serious risks. Relocation ensures the wolf’s safety and supports ongoing recovery efforts.
