The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is extending its public comment period on a proposal to list the dunes sagebrush lizard as endangered under the Endangered Species Act.
The comment period now closes Oct. 2.
The lizard is found in West Texas and southeastern New Mexico in the shinnery oak sand dune ecosystems. The agency said the species is threatened by oil and gas development, sand mining and changing climate.
