Will try and tell you how things are in this part of the country. I have been in the cattle business for 40 years and have seen a good many ups and downs, some very hard winters and some nice ones. But the last 10 years have been good—you did not need to be a good cowman to make money; they were a little higher every year. Back in ’36 we sold good cows with calves at side for $30 for both and they went to California for stock cattle.
We have had two dry summers in this part of Montana and if we don’t get some moisture we will have to quit. Most everyone cut down on their cattle and had to buy hay to winter on, and it is getting scarce and high, so the main thing for a man in the stock business is grass. It is nice to have good prices, but fat grass is absolutely necessary, more so than high prices.
We are having a hard winter in most all of Montana. It has been 40 to 50 below zero. I like your paper and the editorials are very good. — Thos. L. Dewar, Landusky, Mont.
