A group of Wyoming legislators is proposing a resolution to allow gathering and slaughtering wild horses. House Joint Resolution 3 proposes amending the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 so that feral horses can be gathered for slaughter and the meat sold.
“Right now we’re sending horses to these feedlots,” Rep. John Winter (R-Thermopolis), a resolution sponsor, told WyoFile. “That’s costing the taxpayer over $77 million a year—and that’s unacceptable.”
The resolution reads that “the resources in the arid West cannot be managed for multiple use because wild horses unduly infringe upon other uses by damaging riverbeds and overgrazing on limited forage, while using and often damaging the infrastructure of other public land users.”
The Wyoming Legislature calls on Congress to enact legislation and make other policy changes to allow equine slaughter and processing.
