The Montana Department of Livestock (MDOL) reported on Feb. 12 the first case of non-bat rabies in the state since 2014.
A rabies-infected skunk was captured in Big Horn County, MT, and there are no known cat, dog, or human exposures at this time.
MDOL has issued a 60-day county-wide quarantine for dogs, cats and ferrets.
The quarantine will last until April 12.
During the quarantine, all non-vaccinated dogs, cats and ferrets are to remain in the county for no less than 60 days; any mentioned animals vaccinated against rabies for the first time may be released from quarantine after 28 days from vaccination date; animals past due on the vaccine be released after a booster vaccine; and written notification will be provided when the quarantine is over.
