USDA and the state of Oregon have finalized a cooperative agreement to allow the state inspection program to inspect meat products produced for shipment within the state.
“This program is especially helpful to small meat and poultry processors in building their local and state marketplaces,” said Deputy Undersecretary for Food Safety Sandra Eskin.
A total of 28 states now have state inspection programs. Under the programs, establishments are able to apply for federal or state inspection, but products produced under state inspection are limited to be sold within the state only. The Food Safety and Inspection Service will provide up to 50 percent of the state’s operating funds, training and other assistance.
