While Wyoming legislators are proposing to allow horse slaughter, members in the Colorado General Assembly are proposing to prohibit horse slaughter for human consumption.
The bill establishes the slaughter of a horse, mule or burro for human consumption as a Class 1 misdemeanor that carries a fine of at least $1,000.
The bill proposes for every equine bill of sale to include a notice about the criminal liability of buying or selling equine with the intent of human consumption. The bill would also require livestock auction management to post a notice in a conspicuous location warning of the criminal liability.
