Legal Ledger Brief: Wolf pack spotted in Colorado

Shortly following the news that the Rocky Mountain Wolf Action Fund had acquired enough petition signatures to put wolf introduction on the 2020 Colorado ballot, a pack of wolves was sighted in northern Colorado.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) said an eyewitness reported six large canids—which can include wolves, coyotes and domestic dogs—traveling together.

A scavenged elk near the sighting “strongly suggests a pack of gray wolves may now be residing in Colorado,” CPW said.

CPW Northwest Regional Manager JT Romatzke said in a news release, “The sighting marks the first time in recent history CPW has received a report of multiple wolves traveling together.”

CPW began an investigation after the elk was discovered, and found several large tracks from several animals that were consistent with ones made by wolves, and also found the condition of the elk carcass to be consistent with known wolf predation.
