Legal Ledger Brief: Wastewater woes for Kane Beef

Corpus Christi, TX’ Kane Beef plant seemingly cannot keep out of the news.

City officials have ordered the plant temporarily shut down after inspectors found the company had discharged “unauthorized waste into the city’s wastewater system,” according to the local Caller Times.

A hearing was held Jan. 24 regarding whether the company’s wastewater permit would be revoked, but results of the hearing were not available at printing.

The Caller Times nor the coverage by Meating Place indicated what the unauthorized waste was, but the city’s Assistant Director of Utilities and Wastewater, John Byrum, was quoted as saying the daily tests conducted through the Texas Pollutant Discharge Elimination System showed that the plant’s test “exceeded permit parameters to a point where it could cause damage to some of our public treatment works.”

The plant has had other run-ins with the city, owing it $2.3 million in late utility bills.

It also owes an estimated $38 million to cattle suppliers who have not yet been paid.
