Legal Ledger Brief: Utah AG fights monuments order

On Oct. 21, Utah’s Attorney General, Sean Reyes, issued a request for proposals for legal assistance to challenge President Joe Biden’s order to restore protections for two national monuments. The application process closes Nov. 5.

On Oct. 8, Biden issued two proclamations to restore protections to the Bears Ears National Monument and the Grand Staircase-Escalante Monument. Conservation groups expressed their disappointment with the move.

“Rather than roll up their sleeves, work with Native American Tribes and local partners to ensure that the sacred sites and the objects in these monuments are safeguarded, the governor is instead prepared to do exactly the opposite,” Steve Bloch, legal director of Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, told KUER News.
