Up to $16 million will be available from the USDA to fund “socially disadvantaged and veteran farmers and ranchers” to own and operate successful farms.
The funding is made through the Outreach and Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers and Veteran Farmers and Ranchers Program (also known as the 2501 Program) by the USDA Office of Partnerships and Public Engagement.
The 2018 Farm Bill boosted funding for the program, and nonprofits, higher education institutions and Indian tribes can support the veteran farmers and ranchers through education, training and conferences on the industry.
The program has awarded 451 grants since 1994, totaling more than $103 million.
Eligible 2501 Program applicants include nonprofit organizations, community organizations, and higher education institutions.
The application deadline is Aug. 15, 2019.
