Texas Senate Bill 421, which would have changed the state’s permissive eminent domain law to offer more landowner protections, effectively died last week.
The bill’s conference report went unsigned by the Saturday, May 25 deadline.
“For years, thousands of property owners across Texas have asked for real, meaningful eminent domain reform, said Robert McKnight, Jr., president of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, in an official statement.
“We are disappointed that despite these pleas, eminent domain reform was not accomplished this legislative session.”
The bill was sponsored by 45 members of the Texas Legislature, with majority support coming from Republicans, though four sponsors were Democrats.
This was the third year in a row such a bill has been submitted in Texas.
