President Donald Trump announced in a tweet in early December that steel and aluminum tariffs would be restored on Brazil and Argentina as a result of “massive devaluation of their currencies.”
The tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum would replace import quotas on the products.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro took to Facebook Dec. 20 and said following a phone call with Trump, “he decided not to make good on his plan to impose tariffs on our steel/aluminum,” and “Our commercial relations and friendship are getting stronger and stronger.”
Similarly, Trump tweeted that he had a “great call” with Bolsonaro and “The relationship between the United States and Brazil has never been stronger.”
It is uncertain whether Argentina will still be subject to the tariffs.
