A total of 24 groups are challenging the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to enforce federal air pollution laws against what they call “factory farms,” referring to animal feeding operations (AFO).
In 2005, the administration entered an agreement with AFOs, called the Air Compliance Agreement, where participants shared responsibility for funding an emissions monitoring study.
The study aimed to develop ways to estimate AFO emissions and help AFOs “determine and comply with their regulatory responsibilities under the Clean Air Act,” according to the EPA. The groups are calling on the Biden administration to rescind the agreement and “enforce federal air pollution laws against these major polluters.”
