New Mexico’s House of Representatives and Senate recently passed the Wildlife Conservation and Public Safety Act, also known as Roxy’s Law, which would prohibit traps, snares, and poisons on public lands.
The bill, Senate Bill 32, will now head to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) for her consideration. The bill was easily passed by the Senate on a vote of 23-16, but narrowly passed in the House by a vote of 35-34.
Opponents argued it should first be determined whether new rule changes to wildlife management, such as prohibiting traps within a half-mile of trailheads, are working before considering the bill.
