Since May, more than 40 wild burro carcasses with gunshot wounds have been found along Interstate 15 between Halloran Springs, CA and Primm, NV.
The burros are from the Clark Mountain Herd Area in San Bernardino County.
Pledges from several conservation and animal welfare organizations have totaled up to $58,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the deaths.
The animals are protected by the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 which protects feral horses and burros from capture, harassment or death.
Those found guilty of violating any of these regulations can be subject up to a $2,000 fine and up to one year in person for each count charged.
“With the increasing reward now on the table, we’re confident that someone will come forward with actionable information soon.
The cruelty involved in shooting these burros and leaving them to die warrants prosecution to the fullest extent of the law,” said BLM Deputy Director for Policy and Programs William Perry Pendley.
