A group of senators has introduced the Food Security is National Security Act, which will “protect American agricultural interests in foreign acquisitions.”
Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Jon Tester (D-MT) proposed legislation to give U.S. agriculture and food officials permanent representation on the Committee on Foreign Investment in The United States.
The bill also includes new criteria for the committee to consider when reviewing transactions that could result in control of a U.S. business by a foreign company, according to the senators.
“With foreign investments from around the world going to American farmland and agricultural companies that are critical to the nation’s supply chain, it’s important that we provide adequate oversight into these investments,” Grassley said.
